How To Make Your Self-Love Goals Stick

Setting a goal is easy. All you have to do is tell yourself or someone else that you’re going to do something. You don’t even have to say it out loud—if you want to set a goal to become a famous ballet dancer, all you have to do is decide it in your mind!

The tricky part about goals is actually reaching them. You can tell yourself every day that you want to be a ballet dancer, but if you don’t put in the work, you’re never going to get there.

So, when it comes to determining goals for your self-esteem and self-image, how can you set yourself up for success?

Be specific when setting your goals.

Ambiguous goals are easy to dodge. When you outline the specifics of what you’re trying to do and how you’re going to get there, you hold yourself accountable for taking those steps. Sit down and define your goals in detail (bonus points for writing them down!). This will help you determine exactly how you can achieve that goal and measure your success along the way.

Example: Instead of “I’m going to start exercising more,” try, “I’ll do 30 minutes of moderate cardio, twice a week.”

Break down bigger objectives into sets of smaller goals.

It’s important to have a clear vision of your long-term ambitions, but it is equally as important to identify the short-term, actionable steps that will get you there. Every short-term goal you set should work to get you closer to your long-term goal. On the long journey ahead, achieving these smaller goals will help keep you feeling engaged, accomplished, and motivated on your way to your ultimate objective.

Example: A long-term goal of “I want to improve my self-image”, can be broken down into: “I will wear an outfit that makes me feel sexy every Thursday, schedule a boudoir shoot to celebrate my body, and write down three things I love about myself at the start of every week.”

Behind every goal, be clear about your why.

What does reaching this goal mean to you? How will achieving it change your life for the better? This is the mental and emotional connection that drives you forward, keeping you motivated to work toward your goal even when it isn’t easy.

Example: “I want to be kinder to myself and minimize negative self-talk, so I can feel more confident and less anxious in my everyday life.”
