How to Not Lose Yourself in Motherhood

They say it takes a village to raise a child, so where are the villagers at?

Being a mom in the 21st century can feel like a truly isolating experience, especially during a global pandemic. We are social creatures by nature and instinctively rely on others for support and encouragement, but in today’s age, we are expected to raise our children on our own, with limited help and resources. What once was said to take a village is now two parents (sometimes one) struggling to make a beautiful life for their child while also finding time to take care of themselves.

Here are a few ways to not lose yourself in motherhood and maintain your sense of self during these busy years as a mom!

Be Open with Your Partner

If you are lucky enough to have a partner, it is important to let them know how you are feeling and what you need to be happy and fulfilled. Be open and honest with them about your needs and what they can do to support you in keeping a sense of yourself while being a mom.

You might need them to pull their weight around the house or to look after the kids once a week, so you have the time to do a hobby or activity for a few hours. Be open about your needs; hopefully, your partner will support them.

Set Limits and Boundaries

Your children naturally want to be around you 24/7, which is wonderful but can also be extremely draining. It leaves you feeling that you have no sense of self, no privacy, and no time to decompress. It is important to set limits and boundaries to find ways to give yourself some time alone.

You can’t be at their disposal every minute of every day and not feel a loss of your identity. Whatever you need, determine what is most important to you and what limits you need to put in place, and then follow through by setting them.

Make Self-Care a Priority

Self-care looks different for every woman. Maybe it’s getting yourself on to a better vitamin routine, getting more sleep, or working out more often. Maybe it’s finding time to decompress by meditating daily, getting your nails done once a week, or having a regular massage. Whatever it may be, try to take small steps towards incorporating more of it into your daily life whenever and however you can.
